Perfectionism will not help you achieve your goals!

Don’t confuse healthy striving with perfectionism, they may look the same but they are quite different. Healthy striving is doing your best, and working diligently towards a goal. Perfectionism, on the other hand, is a type of performance to try to avoid shame, blame or judgement. It is the energy/intention behind the action that makes all the difference. One has an internal focus, it is about what you want. The other has an external focus and is about trying to please other people.

It is also vital not to aim for perfection, it is impossible and pretty much gives you an excuse to give up before you even start. Once you stuff up in any way, you have a free pass to quit because if you can’t do it perfectly there is no point in doing it at all!

Brené Brown explains that research shows that perfectionism hampers success. In fact, it is often the path to depression, anxiety, addiction and life paralysis.

“Perfectionism
Is not about striving for excellence or healthy striving
It’s a cognitive behavioural process
A way of thinking and feeling that says this
If I look perfect, do it perfect, work perfect and live perfect
I can avoid or minimise shame, blame and judgement”
