According to a new, large scale study, taking vitamin D supplements may help ward off dementia. Researchers from Canada and England explored the relationship between vitamin D supplementation and dementia in 12,388 participants in the USA who had an average age of 71 and were dementia-free when they signed up.

The study was published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia, it found that taking vitamin D was associated with living dementia-free for longer, and they also found 40% fewer dementia diagnoses in the group who had been taking supplements.

Overall, they found evidence to suggest that earlier supplementation might be particularly beneficial, before any onset of cognitive decline. Vitamin D was effective in all groups, however the team found that effects were significantly greater in females, compared to males. Effects were also greater in people with normal cognition, compared to those who had reported signs of mild cognitive impairment.

Vitamin D is known for its role in bone health, immune health, mood and much more; it also plays a crucial role in brain function. Studies have suggested that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Based on studies so far, it is fair to say that vitamin D supplements may be an effective strategy for preventing dementia, especially among older adults who are considered at greater risk of cognitive decline.

Studies indicate that while vitamin D may help slow down the progression of the disease; it is not believed to be a cure for dementia.

We can get vitamin D from the sun, the darker your skin, the harder it is to get what you need from the sun. These days we often limit our exposure to the sun due to risks of skin cancer. Vitamin D is also in food sources such as fatty fish, egg yolk, cod liver oil and beef liver. Not everyone eats enough of those foods and many people have digestive issues that effect absorption of nutrients.

Overall, the results of this study suggest that taking vitamin D supplements may be a simple and relatively cost-effective way to reduce the risk of dementia, especially among older adults who are at greater risk of cognitive decline.

It is important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplements, at Informed Health we are trained and experieneced in how to prescribe vitamins and minerals safely in regards to any prescription medications you may be on or health conditions you have.

My grandmother used to give me cod liver oil as a child, there was certainly wisdom in some of the traditions passed down in families. Since we now live in a time of slip, slop, slap for sun protection, we really do need to ensure we are getting vitamin D in our diet and/or monitor our need for supplements.
