Did you know research suggests that only 8% of people achieve their New Year’s goals? Some of you may have already broken your resolutions. The way you approach goals and resolutions can make a big difference in you results.

6 things you need to know to help you achieve your health goals:

  1. Begin with a clean slate, forgive yourself for what you did or didn’t do before now, and move on. If you begin with the belief that you can’t achieve your goals because you don’t have enough willpower, discipline or some other negative story about yourself, it won’t end well. And each time you begin with that attitude and then fail, it will only serve to confirm what you already believe about yourself. A kind of self-fulfilling cycle of failure and shame. Rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat….. Sound familiar? This will really wear you down over time.
  2. Try a different approach. The definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
  3. Have a good goal, It is always good to start with a goal that is important to you (it won’t happen if it is just something you or somebody else thinks you should do, it must be important to you). It is more about what you want your life to look like. Making changes can be challenging, it won’t last if it is not what you really want.
  4. Understand your reptilian brain, it’s job is to protect you and it is very threatened by change (even if the change is a good one). It will try and sabotage your goals, you will begin making excuses to quit. When this happens, often people feel ashamed and think there is something wrong with them. When you understand how the human brain works; you know how to work with it, rather than seeing it as a terrible flaw.
  5. Plan how you will succeed, it is said that if we fail to plan, we plan to fail. Who is going to give you support? What will you need to change about your environment, so it supports your success? What do you need to know/learn? What are the daily habits that you will begin to help you achieve your goal?
  6. Identify if emotionally eating is an issue for you. If it is a challenge you have; this will need to be addressed before or when you embark on any eating changes. A diet does not fix emotional eating issues, you will just be setting yourself up for failure.
