A common mistake I have noticed that people make with their goals is thinking that they need to get all their ducks in a row first. I don’t know if you’ve ever watched a mother duck and seen how she gets all of her ducks in a row? She certainly doesn’t stand there and go, okay, Huey, Dewey, Louie, line up here; no of course she doesn’t do that. What she does is she just starts moving and her ducklings intuitively follow her and that’s how they end up “in a row”. This is also how you can get all of your ducks in a row, you begin. Many of us think that we can only start on our dream when we have all sorts of things in line and it is simply not true.

The way you get all your ducks in a row is you begin, you begin somewhere. You just start. That’s what mother duck does. She just starts walking and the ducks all line up behind her. She does not stand there and spend two hours, two days, two weeks or two years preparing, making sure they’re all in a line and just right, she simply begins to move. So if there’s something that you’re putting off until you have all your ducks lined up, I would say to you, just get started!

Start somewhere, do the thing you can do now. And then you do the next thing and then you do the next thing, and then you do the next thing, right? That is simply how goals are achieved. The only way to get momentum is to begin. There’s no momentum when you’re sitting there, when a train’s sitting there on the station, there’s no momentum, not until it starts to move. So you literally have to move to build momentum. You will soon find out that the universe rewards action.

Just get moving and look for opportunities, answers and support along the way. You will find that getting moving gives you momentum and you get more clarity and see more opportunities along the way, because you can see more terrain when you’re further along the line. When you’re still at the station, you can’t see anything except the station; you can’t see anything over those hills. When you get up over those hills, you can finally see!

If you put off your dreams until you have all your ducks in a row, you may miss your opportunity. Don’t worry about your ducks, just get begin, life’s too short! As Sheryl Sandberg (the COO of Facebook) says “done is better than perfect”.
